Tiny insects - a big step towards the sustainable food production of tomorrow.

At the heart of NorInsect's business lies the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). This tiny insect is able to convert low-value residues into valuable resources such as nutritious feed ingredients and organic fertilizers.

NorInsect started as a garage project in Stordal in 2014. Founder Peder Vikenes had a vision of developing sustainable production of animal protein from mealworms. In 2017, the current CEO of NorInsect, Harald Espeland, joined as co-founder. Three years later, investors came on board, and today NorInsect has established a 3500 m2 factory in Stordal, where large-scale farming of mealworms takes place.

The mealworm is a small insect with great potential. They are fed with residual products from local food production and from the mealworm we get protein and oil of high quality and organic fertilizers. The protein and oil can be used as valuable components in feed for farmed animals (such as salmon and chicken) and for pets. At the same time, the frass, i.e. the excrement of the mealworm, can be used as a nutritious organic fertilizer. When the whole animal and its by-products can be utilized, NorInsect gets a production with virtually zero waste.

NorInsect's overall goal is to contribute in changing today's feed industry, by offering environmentally friendly animal protein from mealworms at a competitive price. This goal is in line with the growing global need for sustainable food production with minimal resource use and a small environmental footprint.

With a lot of hard work and creative minds, NorInsect has taken a leading role as one of the Nordic region's largest insect producers.
